"Should I use Mechanic?"

  1. Take a look at Mechanic's task library. If your specific need is covered there, install the task, and you'll be good to go. :)
  2. If your need isn't covered there, take a look at Shopify's list of workflow/automation apps. If you find an app that covers your business requirements, choose it, and don't look back. :)
  3. If your need isn't covered there, come back to Mechanic. If you've got any familiarity with code at all, you'll be able to build a task (using simple Liquid) to solve your problem. If that's not you, use the in-app chat to get in touch – we're usually available to help you put together your solution. :)

Background

Isaac here – I created Mechanic. :) I built it because I wanted a way to quickly assemble a really, really specific piece of automation for my Shopify merchants, something I could hand off and let them manage and reconfigure without having to come back to me.

If you're a developer, like me, Mechanic lets you solve problems that would otherwise require building a custom app. Mechanic takes care of infrastructure, monitoring and interface: you write a script in simple Liquid, the merchant gets an auto-generated form for customization, and nobody has to worry about hosting or uptime. In a sense, Mechanic is an app platform in its own right.

If you're a merchant on Shopify, Mechanic solves problems that would otherwise require hiring out something custom. Every problem we solve for a merchant ends up in our task library. So, choose Mechanic if your solution is already in our library, or if your business requirements can't be covered with another automation app.

Creating a Mechanic task does require working with code, and if you have any background there at all, you'll find Mechanic's Liquid interface welcoming. :) If code isn't for you, get in touch – we're usually available to help put together your solution.
